Leigh takes the lead

Ian's son, Leigh, became paramount to the organisation and took over management in 1987. Ian and Leigh had a vision for some remaining land in Pauanui, and so the Pauanui Waterways canal development was brought to life in the early 1990's.

This opened doors for many, creating a safe and fun environment for residents to enjoy swimming, boating and other waterborne activities. Community and lifestyle was central to Leigh’s vision of creating canal developments. He looked on to Whitianga, and in 1999 started developing the now expansive Whitianga Waterways Development.

In 2001 we established Hopper Living, expanding our offerings to aged retirement living. In 2002, our flagship retirement village, Maygrove Village, was built in Orewa, Auckland.

For the Waterways, Northland was next in target, where Marsden Cove began in 2005 and is the third canal development.

Throughout the 2010s, to support the growth of Whitianga, Hoppers produced Placemakers, Countdown, and The Warehouse.

Family and lifestyle focus
Hopper Developments has certainly expanded in the last 20 years or so. The company has diversified from property development into retirement living, marine associated activities, commercial, retail and residential development, with much more planned on the horizon. Family and lifestyle is certainly still the company focus and remains core to the company strategy.
2021
Leigh semi-retires
Leigh has chosen to retire in Whitianga Waterways and enjoys much of his time boating and exploring the Coromandel East Coast. As for the business, his two children Gray and Shana, alongside his nephew Andy, and a few key personnel such as CEO Tim Brooks whom has been with the company for 40 years, are collectively driving company activities.
2023
Next generation
As Tim Brooks is heading into his well-deserved retirement, Andy has been newly elected as CEO.
Andy and Gray, with their families, live and work on the Hibiscus Coast - where Hoppers HQ is based, and Shana is located at the
Waterways at Marsden Cove, balancing family and work-life between the two offices. As Hoppers continues to grow, the company remains in
good hands with the next generations forging ahead.
